“Creating a safe, inclusive space has always been my top priority. I want everyone who walks through our doors to feel they belong here,” shared Alia Mathias, founder of Wicked West Nails.
Alia’s journey began in Wichita, Kansas. There, she grew up surrounded by art and creativity, inspired by her mother’s artistic endeavors. Moving to Salt Lake City in 2019 at just nineteen years old to pursue BMX racing, Alia soon discovered her passion for the beauty industry. Her transition into nails began serendipitously, with a nail apprenticeship in 2020. By September 2021, Alia had taken the bold step of starting her own studio, eventually growing it into the vibrant and eclectic Wicked West Nails we see today.
The salon is as much a reflection of Alia’s artistic identity as it is a hub for community. “It’s not your typical nail salon,” Alia explained. “We’ve got floral couches that look like they came straight out of your grandma’s living room, pink arches behind the desks, velvet curtains, and walls adorned with art from local artists.” The atmosphere exudes warmth and individuality, with every detail carefully curated to make clients feel at home.
When asked to expand on her amazing pedicures, Alia said that they offer dry pedicures only. “We replace the soaking basin with hot towels.” She went on to say “Dry pedi's are a modern and sanitary approach to eliminate health risks traditionally associated with pedicure thrones.”
Alia’s innovative business model provides aspiring nail technicians with an opportunity to bypass the traditional commission-based salon system, which often leaves them struggling to make a livable wage. Instead, Alia offers tiered rent options and mentoring, helping her team build their clientele and establish their own independent businesses. This approach has created a thriving collective of ten nail technicians who share resources and support one another.
Alia’s vision extends to fostering inclusivity. “We’re not just a place to get your nails done. We’re a space where people can come, hang out, and feel seen and heard,” Alia said. Wicked West Nails also hosts community events, markets featuring minority- and women-owned businesses, and even discussions on beauty standards and self-care.
Alia’s dedication to supporting others extends beyond the nail salon. A nearby sister business, leased and sublet by Alia, houses estheticians offering facials, tooth gems, brow services, and lash lifts. “It’s all about creating opportunities for others, just as I was given opportunities when I started out.”
Reflecting on her journey, Alia attributes her success to the supportive community in Salt Lake. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without the amazing people here,” she said. Her vision for Wicked West Nails is deeply rooted in her personal values. “This is more than a business. It’s a family.”
“I want everyone to feel like they have a place here,” Alia concluded. “Whether they’re here for a service or just to hang out on the couch, they’re always welcome.”
