“I got my first plant when I was around seven years old - a Spider plant. I had it for years.” Bridget Bauer, owner of Beyond the Leaf, Inc, fondly recalls the beginning of her lifelong passion for greenery. Born in Wyoming and raised in the Sugar House neighborhood of Utah, Bridget was always surrounded by plants, both inside and out. Though she dabbled in flowering varieties, her true love was for plants with unique, leafy patterns.

Bridget’s early career saw her in various roles, but she always returned to her love for plants, managing a nursery for several years. Despite the seasonal nature of the job, she thrived in the environment, growing plants at home and selling cuttings to friends. “My friends kept asking me why I didn’t open my own shop,” she shared. After selling her plants on Etsy for a short time during Covid, the opportunity to take over a space that had previously been a plant shop felt like the perfect next step.

Now, twenty years after her first venture into selling plants, Bridget has opened Beyond the Leaf, Inc. The shop is filled with a diverse selection of plants, many grown in her home. She even has tents set up in several rooms to accommodate her impressive Hoya collection of over 300 varieties. If she does not grow the plants herself, she sources them from local growers, ensuring a wide array that includes everything from African violets and carnivorous plants to philodendrons and Monsteras.

Beyond the Leaf, Inc is more than just a plant shop; it is an immersive experience that begins with Bridget herself. Her extensive knowledge allows her to guide customers, offering personalized advice on the care each plant requires. The shop also showcases handcrafted beaded plant hangers, and locally made lotions and bath salts, creating a sanctuary for plant enthusiasts. “I want walking into the shop to feel like you are entering a mini botanical garden,” she says. “My dream, my goal, is to have the community of plant lovers grow with me.”
