“We noticed there were some high-end shops in town and some budget-friendly ones, but nothing really in between - nothing really woman-owned at the time.” This insight from Danielle Bossert, one of the co-founders of Strawberry Mansion, captures the essence of what she and her sister, Josie, set out to create when they opened their shop in 2022. Set in a vibrant area of Salt Lake, Strawberry Mansion offers a carefully curated collection of furniture, art, pottery, lighting, and books, all echoing the sisters’ deep-rooted passion for design.

Growing up in Philadelphia, Danielle and Josie were immersed in creativity. This was thanks to their grandmother, an interior decorator, who inspired their love for beautiful spaces. and a family tradition of repurposing and reselling items - a practice known as “huckstering” in Pennsylvania. "When we would find something, we would resell it, whether it was flowers or furniture. We have it in our blood to do this kind of work."

After living abroad as teachers in Africa, the sisters eventually found themselves in Salt Lake. Before this, however, Danielle pursued a formal education in design, later honing her skills in staging and interior projects. Meanwhile, Josie explored the world of furniture sales after moving to Salt Lake in 2018. When Danielle relocated to Utah during COVID, the sisters decided to turn their lifelong passion into a business. Their combined experiences and shared aesthetic sensibilities led them to open Strawberry Mansion, a store that strikes a balance between high-end design and accessibility. The name Strawberry Mansion has deep personal significance for the sisters. It was inspired by a historic neighborhood in Philadelphia, known for its stunning mansions and rich history - a place they dreamed of visiting as children. The name is also a nod to their childhood memories of strawberry picking with their grandparents.

The boutique stands out with its eclectic mix of items, from medieval prints to mid-century modern finds, all sourced within a day’s drive. The sisters take pride in offering pieces that are not only stylish but also accessible. “We’re focused on finding interesting items, things that are intriguing to us, whether they’re made by a famous designer or crafted by someone’s grandpa,” says Danielle. The shop also supports other vendors by renting out shelves, creating a space where local artisans can sell their unique collectibles.

The Central 9th district, where Strawberry Mansion is found, has blossomed into a hub of independently owned businesses, many of them run by women. The sisters cherish the sense of community that has developed around their shop and appreciate the support they have received from both locals and transplants alike. Josie, who moved to Salt Lake to find a balance between nature and city life, loves the area’s blend of urban amenities and easy access to the outdoors. “It’s one of the reasons people love living here."

Strawberry Mansion is more than just a store; it reflects Danielle and Josie’s journey, their admiration for their grandmother, and their desire to offer something new to Salt Lake's retail landscape. As Golden Braid Books and Oasis Café continue to grow, they remain a testament to the power of community, consciousness, and compassion—values that have been braided together since the very beginning.
