“I do not go anywhere without being asked about gardening.” LaRene Bautner says it with quiet certainty. The conversation takes place in what was once the Bautner family home, now one of the offices at Millcreek Gardens - tucked inside what her daughter laughingly calls “the scary closet.” It feels fitting. It is a place where past and present naturally meet. LaRene grew up on this property, raised her five children here, and today works alongside two of them, Heidi Orme and Chris Bautner. Together, they continue a garden center that has been part of Salt Lake City for seven decades.

“Water is a living element. It has consciousness, and it has memory.” Ramon Flores says this with complete certainty, not as a theory, but as something he has spent a lifetime understanding. “Once we opened, I gave every minute, every second of my life to the restaurant to make sure that it would succeed.” For Giuseppe Mirenda, Sicilia Mia was never simply the opening of a restaurant. It was the realization of a family dream that began long before Salt Lake City, and long before he was old enough to sign a lease or speak English. The roots of that dream stretch back to Palermo, Sicily, where food was woven into daily life so completely that family, work, and cooking were inseparable.

“I love connecting with people. I love doing yoga. I just did not love selling something I did not believe in.” That realization stayed with Emily Lam long before she ever imagined owning Ritual Hot Yoga. It followed her from her early years outside Sacramento, through college at UC Santa Barbara, and into the world of tech sales in San Francisco, where she spent her days building relationships and learning what mattered most to people. But something was missing.

“We do not make it about Oliver, but we would never be in this world of golf without him. He is a huge piece of this.” That quiet truth sits at the heart of Rounds Putt Lounge. Collin Dumke can easily talk about the mechanics of the business. He explains guest flow, capacity planning, automated scoring systems, and the difference between weekday and weekend demand with the calm precision of someone trained in analytics. But as the conversation continues, another story begins to emerge. Beneath the numbers and the logistics is something far more personal. The story of Rounds Putt is really about family, about discovering possibility in unexpected places, and about creating a space where people can simply enjoy being together.

“If I were to change my life, I would not be where I am today, because it shaped who I was as a person, and shaped the determination to know what I do not want in my life.” Deana Busch, founder of Enliven Aesthetics & Wellness in Salt Lake, says this with the calm certainty of someone who has lived enough life to understand how the hardest chapters often define the path forward.

“It’s not only about trying to make a profit, but honestly, I do it more for the collective.” That philosophy sits at the heart of Neko Collectibles, the Millcreek shop Bryan Pineda and his wife, Natalia Majda, opened in May 2025. What looks at first like a collectible store is, in many ways, the natural result of Bryan’s life - a life built on curiosity, travel, engineering, and an instinct to understand how things work.

“The man who helped me some fifty years ago got me my first book. I am now passing it forward.” Cindy Dumas, owner of the magnificent Marissa’s Books & Gifts, named for her first granddaughter, was born in San Francisco and moved to Utah prior to beginning junior high. By the time she arrived, school already felt hard. She remembers herself as a struggling student, trying to figure out what she had missed and why she could not catch up. Then, at age eleven, a teacher took an interest in her, and everything shifted.

“We wanted to build a place where people felt comfortable coming in, even if they did not know exactly what they were getting,” Mike Blocher says. “The idea was always to take care of people and let the food speak.” Table X did not appear overnight. It grew slowly and deliberately, shaped by years of work and a belief that food could be thoughtful without being intimidating. From the beginning, it was built on trust: trust between three chefs who believed in one another, trust in cooking seasonally and locally, and trust that guests would be willing to follow them on a culinary journey.

“I would like to say it is a temple to food.” Omar Abou-Ismail says it simply, but everything about Rawtopia Living Cuisine and Beyond is built to support that one idea - a space that nourishes. Not only through what is presented on the table, but through what the food represents to him, and why this restaurant has become his life’s work.

“I was born in Georgia but came here when I was two. So, this is all I know.” John Feldman’s parents were pulled west by the Olympics and became anchored, unexpectedly, by the mountains. “We came here in 2000. My dad has a PhD in medicinal chemistry. He worked for the Olympics in their drug wing, going from Atlanta for the summer games to Utah for the winter games.”

“If you could do anything, what would you do?” This was the question posed to Heather Santi years ago, and her answer was quite simple. “Breakfast.” Long before Eggs in the City became a Salt Lake City institution, she knew this was her favorite meal of the day and one she wanted to share with others. It was not about food trends or culinary ego. It was about people.

“I would have thought you were a little crazy if you told me a year before this that I would be running a cleaning company.” For Steven Connors, owner of Maid Brigade in Salt Lake City, this chapter was never part of the original plan. He grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, one of four children in a swim-tennis community where days were spent outside riding bikes, playing sports, and roaming the neighborhood. At the University of Georgia, he studied finance, ran track and cross country, and graduated in 2007 with a clear, conventional path ahead of him.

Traveling for food is my favorite thing.” For Monet Clough, Catering and Events Director of Beaumont Bakery & Café, that love has never been abstract. She grew up just down the road from the Olympus Hills Shopping Center, with Mount Olympus and Grandeur Peak filling the windows of her childhood. As a teenager, she was constantly in motion, playing basketball, volleyball, and running track. Between practices she came up the hill to work in the place that would quietly become her second home. She was seventeen, in 2021, when she walked into Beaumont Bakery for the first time.

“Your past does not define you. You are capable of healing, and you are capable of change.” For Ronda Davis, the founder of Healing Feathers, those words are not a slogan but the compass that has guided every step of her life.

“Utah is my eighth state,” Joe Bott admitted laughing as if even he still finds it hard to believe. “We moved constantly for my mom’s job.
